Powerful and melodic, the music experiment VAR consist of five individuals rooted from Reykjavík, Iceland. Júlíus Óttar (vocal, guitar), Myrra Rós (vocal, keys), Arnór Jónasson (guitar), Egill Björgvinsson (bass, keys) and Andri Freyr (drums). Hard to describe, VAR plays ill-stirred mixture of post rock, melodic pop and madness though in balance with every song unlike the others.
Beginning as a singer-songwriter project for the shortest period of time, Júlíus Óttar can date VAR back to 2013. Days rather than weeks after the idea of formation, the project reached its next level when artist Myrra Rós contributed her talent and ingenuity, forming the synth and playback driven VAR.
The (soon to be husband and wife) duo released VAR first record in 2014 on the German label Beste Unterhaltung!, a self recorded EP in their own living room. To perform the album on a European tour, Egill Björgvinsson (older brother of Júlíus) takes on the role of bassist of VAR that same summer.
During a concert at the Iceland Airwaves in 2014, the idea of experimenting with a full band came to mind. At that point the idea was to add low-key brushes and guitar overlay to the soundscape but instead Andri and Arnór brought in the roughness of heavy rhythms and guitar-play, a key puzzle in the full and raw soundscape of VAR as it’s known today as it became the perfect platform for the band to begin the writing of new material in which everyone could claim their space in the bands soundscape.
Since VAR’s first release as a full band, a two songs single, Kafbátur EP in 2015, they’ve been active recording a new album, Vetur, that was released in Japan on the label Rimeout Recordings in December 2016 and will be released online in April 2017.
